Happy October! For some people, this is a scary month. But for other people, every month is scary, because they are struggling in a toxic workplace.

Let’s look at what is Scary and the possible solutions:

Scary: Many companies don’t know what their culture is.

Solution: A company’s culture must be clear to all co-workers. When you interview with a company, ask, “What is the culture here?” The company responds, “We are like a family,” but is that really true?

The culture can be explained by sharing the activities, plans and resources that are in place to build the company culture. Scary: Time at work means putdowns, sarcasm and questions like “You’re always so dressed up” and “Your earrings are too big”. At a potluck lunch, co-workers ask, “Did you buy it, or did you make it?” They comment on the item you made and how it was made incorrectly. You feel people talking behind your back.

Solution: Understand that these comments do not happen in front of the boss. Do not expect the victim to speak up and give the disrespect back to the violators. Employees should not be required to defend themselves in the workplace. Offer Respectful Communication training as a solution, plus Success Coaching for all employees to get to the core of why team members act out.
