Introducing Yourself Professionally

How you introduce yourself (in a professional situation ) helps you communicate your brand and it helps people engage with you.

If you are asked to introduce yourself in front of others or in a one-on-one conversation remember the 3 P’s.

So pretend you are at an event and someone says: “So tell us about yourself?”

Purpose: What you do, title or what jobs you are seeking.

Passion:   What you love about that work.

Proof: A quick story about you that shares your  experience or education (builds credibility).

Example:

I am a graphic designer  (Purpose)

I specialize in advertising and website design (Passion)

I just completed the website for XYZ company (Proof)

I am (First & Last Name)

What most people do when they introduce themselves, they say name and title. This leaves everyone wondering what exactly do you work on and are you good at it.  We save our name for last so people can remember it.

People are listening to see what you do and if they need you, so intrigue them by giving detail then say your name so they can connect to you.

To be exceptional and be remembered by everyone in the room add the following:

Attention Grabbing Statement: The opening line that gets attention and describes what your value proposition is.

Example:

Design that engages your customers will increase your revenue.

Lets add that to the sample above.

Design that engages your customers will increase your revenue.  (Attention Grabbing Statement)

I am a graphic designer  (Purpose)

I specialize in advertising and website design (Passion)

I just completed the website for XYZ company (Proof)

I am (First & Last Name) .

Now to be memorable lets add a Call to Action. A strong call to action invites the audience to learn more about you. Example: My website has information to help you or my blog has tips to help you or come to our next meeting or join us at an event.  Then give details and contact information.

Adding this to our sample helps the audience connect and shows your credibility.

Example:

Design that engages your customers will increase your revenue.  (Attention Grabbing Statement)

I am a graphic designer  (Purpose)

I specialize in advertising and website design (Passion)

I just completed the website for XYZ company (Proof)

If you want to get hired, attract clients or get a promotion you will add a power ending. It ties back to the beginning and showcases your value.   It should include your name and showcase the work you do and the job you are seeking

Here is how it works in our sample:

Design that engages your customers will increase your revenue.  (Attention Grabbing Statement)
